Under supervision performs work of routine to complex difficulty providing for security, daily care and welfare of detainees in the Juvenile Detention facility; performs related work as assigned.

Typical Duties DETENTION YOUTH CARE WORKER I TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative only) Mentors, supervises, and directs detained youth Performs searches for contraband Conducts security checks, room checks, and maintains security of the juvenile detention facility Coordinates and controls the movement and activities of detained youth Deescalates, disciplines, and physically restrains detainees as needed Provides crisis intervention Assists in escorting or transporting youth Kitchen duties (may include preparing and serving meals, dishwashing, and cleaning) Housekeeping duties may include detention laundry, housekeeping, and routine maintenance Maintains youth social files, writes reports, and enters timely and accurate data into Juvenile On-line Tracking System (JOLTS).
DETENTION YOUTH CARE WORKER II TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative only) Performs the duties of a Youth Care Worker I (as illustrated above) Distributes medications Completes intake and release procedures Create and implement youth programs Conducts orientation with juveniles DETENTION YOUTH CARE WORKER III: TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative only) Performs the duties of a Youth Care Worker II (as illustrated above) Facilitates communication between youth and parents, social agencies, and /or service providers Receives and inventories supplies from vendors Possesses advanced knowledge of detention standards Organizes and manages programs, visitors, support personnel, and volunteers within the facility May act a shift Lead Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to standing and walking for at least half of their scheduled work shift and are required to possess the independent body mobility to bend, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, and sit for prolonged periods of time and/or drive a vehicle; manual dexterity to reach, and grasp; handwrite or use computer keyboard; vision sufficient to see and read; hear and speak to communicate with customers in person and over the phone; may lift or restrain a detainee, may lift, push or pull materials or equipment of 50 lbs.

DETENTION YOUTH CARE WORKER II MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate's degree in related field; OR one year experience working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR six months experience as a Youth Care Worker I with Coconino County AND demonstrated ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of a YCW I; OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
DETENTION YOUTH CARE WORKER III MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in related field; OR two years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR six months experience as a Youth Care Worker II with Coconino County AND demonstrated ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of a YCW II; OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL POSITIONS: Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must submit to a background check to include fingerprint and polygraph exam prior to hire.
Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for hire within the Juvenile Detention facility.
Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within the first three months on the job and retain certification throughout employment.
Forty hours of orientation training are required within the first month on the job.
Sixteen additional hours of COJET certified training are required each year.
Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
A final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to develop positive working relationships with detained youth that has behavioral health issues; provide Positive Structure and Supervision; provide Positive Leadership and Care, and model and teach Pro-social Skills to the youth that are being housed in the living unit.
Please Note: These positions require the ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
These positions are safety-sensitive.
These positions are non-exempt from overtime.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Working knowledge of: - Practices and procedures of a juvenile detention facility - Juvenile court proceedings - Standard housekeeping practices - Human behavior and various social, economic and cultural backgrounds - Juvenile software program (JOLTSAZ) Ability to: - Deal impartially with individuals of various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds - Work rotating shifts - Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety - Communicate effectively verbally and in writing - Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public - Follow written and verbal instructions Coconino County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
