Job Description The Mihaljevic Lab at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar to support a recently funded National Science Foundation Ecology & Evolution of Infectious Disease (EEID) grant.
This five-year project will lead to an improved understanding of how climate change can impact the spread of infectious disease in marine systems.
The project is a collaborative effort between the Fisheries, Aquatic Science, and Technology (FAST) Lab at Alaska Pacific University, the United States Geological Survey Marrowstone Marine Laboratory, and Northern Arizona University.
The successful candidate will contribute to a multi-institutional initiative to test model-derived hypotheses on the susceptibility of Pacific herring to cold- and warm-water adapted pathogens under climate change.
Anticipated results will increase our ability to predict the effects of a changing climate on the long-term stability of fish-pathogen interactions and will contribute to sustainable aquatic resource management by informing fisheries managers about impacts of increased water temperatures on fish health.
The successful candidate will serve as a collaborative scientific lead for this ambitious research effort, with primary responsibility for guiding the intellectual development of mathematical and statistical modeling frameworks that are core deliverables of this grant.
Key activities include: (a) working with the Principal Investigators to develop theoretical and computational frameworks that build the effects of temperature into dynamics of host-pathogen interactions; (b) envisioning, coding, and validating statistical algorithms to estimate the parameters of these epidemiological models; (c) coordinating on multi-disciplinary projects with a dynamic, collaborative team; and (d) potential co-supervision of one or more research assistants (e.
g.
, undergraduate or graduate students) that will help with implementation work.
While much initial and overall guidance will be provided, key requirements are the ability and curiosity to generate novel insights, write manuscripts, and manage sub-projects within the scope of the research program.
The Postdoctoral Scholar will provide creative input to solve the many challenges encountered in innovation and research, while also completing research products in the form of written manuscripts and scientific presentations.
